Big Changes Ahead for the Google Glass Development Team

As Google (News - Alert) works on the next generation of Google Glass, the company has given a new codename to the team responsible for developing the device: Project Aura, which is quite similar to another Google project codenamed Ara. Ara is the firm’s other forward-looking technology effort to build a modular smartphone with components that are easier to swap out than any phones we currently have on the market.

Ivy Ross, who joined Google back in 2014 in order to help move the initial Google Glass project forward is now leading Project Aura and answers directly to one of the biggest bigwigs in the company, Tony Fadell. Changing the codename of the team that is working on this project is certainly not the only thing the company has done recently.

It appears Google is jumpstarting the next step in Glass, as there are a number of reports indicating the firm has gone on a bit of a hiring spree. Among the people being recruited to Google are engineers who had previously worked for Amazon’s Lab 126 hardware division—which was recently decimated by the online retailer in August. That loss for Amazon looks to be Google’s gain.

While Google Glass is still something the company wants to make as good as it possibly can, it appears Project Aura is looking at a number of other things when it comes to wearable tech, as indicated by recent reports. Part of the reason for this appears to be the fact that Google Glass’s redesign is more than a year away. At the same time, Google is also looking at a device that doesn’t have a full redesign that could be used for specific industries. In other words, Project Aura has it’s hands full.
