With our society on the cusp of an age of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), every new development in the field is exciting as the technology finds its home in a wider range of business and consumer applications. The dental community is the latest to see these benefits, with a new solution incorporating the Epson Moverio BT (News - Alert)-200 smart glasses and eye-CAD Connect software from iDent.

Patterson Dental, a subsidiary of value-added distributor Patterson Companies, Inc., has partnered with iDent to market the new solution to dentists in the U.S., which will feature the Moverio BT-200 producing a 3D digital model of a patient’s teeth with eye-CAD Connect and displaying it directly in the dentist’s visual field. These smart glasses have a transparent display and fall more under the AR category, using a small forward-facing camera and micro projectors on each side of the lens to project overlays of digital content on top of the real-world environment. By combining this functionality with motion sensors to capture head movement as well as a connected control unit featuring a textured touchpad and additional motion sensors, the Moverio BT-200 allows dentists to maintain visual contact with the patient and his/her teeth while simultaneously viewing the 3D model.

Furthermore, the eye-CAD Connect software can immediately take a scan of the patient’s teeth and design an ultra-accurate digital crown molding, which can then be constructed and put into the patient’s mouth during the same visit. This solution is therefore a vital tool for improving dentists’ overall efficiency and increasing the precision of dental scans, with the added benefit of reducing the risk of repetitive stress injuries due to the need to constantly glance up at a computer screen.

“We are thrilled the Moverio BT-200 can serve as an invaluable tool in the dental field, and we are working closely with Patterson and iDent to launch the solution nationwide,” commented Eric Mizufuka, Product Manager at New Ventures for Epson America. “This solution demonstrates the power of Epson's technologies and our unique ability to deliver high volumes of production smart glasses to the market at a reasonable price.”

Epson is a pioneer in the AR field with its Moverio BT-200 smart glasses, and will surely continue developing its product to support more applications, find uses in a much broader range of industries and drive progression of the technology in general with more permeation into business and consumer culture.

The joint solution with Patterson Dental and iDent is currently being used at a small dentistry office in San Diego, California called Dr. Vasquez and Associates, where reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. The solution was officially launched late last week and is now open to all dentistry offices looking to improve patient care and secure a place at the forefront of technological innovation.
