Whether it’s former President Barrack Obama or Bobby Moynihan, the mic drop is a well known practice “used to emphasize that a discussion is at an end after a definitive or particularly impressive point has been made.” In the data center interconnect (DCI) world, it’s fair to say innovation is underway but still rare to experience a mic drop moment. Courtesy of Ciena, today we have one.
Building on the success of the Waveserver family, Ciena introduced Waveserver Ai—a tool developed with the future in mind. DCI is transforming, and as data center operators are tasked with supporting high-speed connectivity to interconnect users across multiple environments and Web-scale providers are required now to bring more content to end users, the demand for high capacity DCI continues to soar.
WaveserverAi meets this demand head on, offering improved capacity and service densities while minimizing data center footprint. In short, the platform scales to 2.4T in a single rack space as a result of Ciena’s WaveLogic Ai coherent technology, presenting up to 100 percent more density compared to the market. And, power usage is reduced because Waveserver Ai’s consumption is ultra-low power per bit.
“Internet content providers and data center operators demand open and programmable networks, the ability to provide ultra-high capacity metro and ultra-long reach subsea applications, as well as the ability to minimize power and space requirements. Ciena’s Waveserver Ai is the hammer that hits this nail on the head. By incorporating the latest generation of its WaveLogic coherent DSP technology, this new platform will be the industry benchmark in high performance data center interconnect,” noted Don Frey, Principal Analyst, Intelligent Networks, Ovum (News - Alert).
As a result of Waveserver Ai’s programmable coherent chipset, deployment and planning is greatly simplified – allowing for tuning from 100G to 400G to maximum capacity regardless of distance. In simple terms, Ciena’s Waveserver Ai platform is capable of providing 200G for long haul DCI and 400G for short-haul – which translates to double the capacity of the network.
In terms of integration, a full set of Ciena open APIs and interfaces ensure the platform integrates with existing or new DCI networks and processes. Once deployed, operators can leverage Ciena’s Emulation Cloud to test, create and fine tune applications.
“An inexorable rise in bandwidth demand from cloud computing, IoT, video and more continues to put pressure on today’s networks. By pairing a high-performance optical engine with a familiar web-scale IT operational model, our Waveserver Ai platform delivers more capacity with minimal footprint and greater power efficiency for DCI and other high capacity applications,” explained Steve Alexander, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Ciena.
Ciena’s Waveserver Ai will be available Q2 2017.
This simple to deploy platform brings on-demand cloud connectivity and high-capacity servers at the push of a button. The Waveserver suite is primed and poised to serve up the next generation in Web-scale networking solutions.
Did you hear that? That’s the production assistant backstage yelling about me denting the mic…
