Smartphones have become the primary source of Internet access for many people around the world. And because these devices are with consumers at all times, they are accessing services for many hours of the day whether it is work-related or to watch their favorite movie, shop or play streaming games. All of these services are placing incredible demand on network bandwidth, which is pushing telecom operators to deploy Web-scale networking technologies. Colt Technology Services, provider of high bandwidth services for enterprises and wholesale customers in Europe, Asia and North America’s largest business hubs, announced it is deploying Ciena's packet-optical technology to effectively manage the explosive growth of bandwidth intensive services, including IT applications, data, content and cloud computing.
Colt Technology Services has a global network that spans four continents and 28 countries, connecting more than 700 data centers with over 24,500 on-net buildings in its Colt IQ Network. The company has been pioneering software defined networks (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) to address the growing challenges of network capacity.
“As the applications and infrastructure that power businesses increasingly move into the cloud and the data center, the demand for reliable, scalable, and high-quality, business-grade connectivity continues to grow. By partnering with leading technology firms like Ciena, we are signaling our commitment to providing the intelligent, high-bandwidth networks enterprises require. Our new network will hugely benefit customers across Europe and Asia,” said Rajiv Datta, CTO, Colt Technology Services.
The deployment of Ciena's packet-optical technology is in part being implemented to future proof the bandwidth demands of Colt Technologies' customers. As Colt continues to grow its presence in Europe and Asia, it will need a flexible platform capable of delivering ultrahigh bandwidth services across its 100Gbps-enabled metro and multi-terabit backbone networks.
Ciena's Web-scale networking technology is going to support the upgrade of Colt's network tools in key European and Asian markets, including London, Frankfurt, Paris, Amsterdam Tokyo, Hong Kong and Singapore.
“{Demand for high-bandwidth services is increasing daily, and service providers need flexible, scalable and programmable optical solutions to stay ahead of the curve and reach a broader base of customers. Ciena’s industry-leading packet optical solutions give operators like Colt a network that provides increased capacity for a range of needs including Ethernet, DCI and cloud computing services,” said Joe Marsella, CTO, EMEA, Ciena.
Ciena’s 6500 platform will give Colt ultra-high bandwidth services for enterprise and data center interconnect (DCI) applications across Europe while supporting business continuity, digital transformation and wholesale terrestrial needs. Initially, the 6500 platform is going to make it possible for Colt to deliver services up to 100G over of a mix of 100G and 200G wavelengths with the WaveLogic coherent technology. This will lay the groundwork for 200G, 400G and Flexible Ethernet in the future using the programmability and flexibility offered with WaveLogic for Web-scale networking.
