It’s a challenging time to be a broadband service provider. The big cablecos, known as MSOs, are among the communications service providers grappling with escalating demands.
A big part of the challenge is because the transmission of online data and video is skyrocketing. The popularity of cloud services and on-demand streaming services like Netflix and YouTube (News - Alert) are key drivers. Ciena’s Elias Cagiannos recently shared that, last year, 54 percent of U.S. households subscribed to Netflix.
So, MSOs need to continue to invest in their networks to keep up with these large and growing demands. They need to become more agile so they can address these demands and effectively compete in the marketplace. And, at the same time, they need to control their costs so they can see returns on all this work and investment.
The MSOs are continuing their long history of upgrading their networks. Cagiannos notes that includes implementing digital fiber nodes in a distributed access architecture in select markets. That pushes fiber closer to customers and lowers the number of customers served by each node.
“Where previously each service group could have upwards of 512 customers all on the same analog fiber node and use multiple coaxial amplifiers, this would be replaced with an average of 10 to 12 DFNs (or R-PHY devices), each with a new service group of 64 customers, pushing deeper into the access and increasing per-user capacity,” he says.
This Fiber Deep approach is important, he adds, but MSOs need to expand on that. So, Ciena is offering an array of adaptive network solutions to help MSOs address the challenges of today and tomorrow. That will enable higher bandwidth connectivity, fiber optimization, lower costs, and simplified integration with back- office systems. They support efficient scaling and free MSOs from their legacy systems that prevent fast service introduction.
These Ciena Fiber Deep Solutions include:
• WaveLogic Ai coherent optics
• the Waveserver Ai stackable interconnect platform
• the 5170 Service Aggregation Switch
• the 8180 Coherent Networking Platform and
• the 6500 Reconfigurable Line System
“These compact and modular platforms deliver more bandwidth and scalability between hub and headend locations, so MSOs can reduce energy consumption and space,” says Cagiannos. “The 8180 combines a highly dense packet switch with Ciena’s WaveLogic Ai coherent optics for advanced programmability. The 8180 is complemented by the 6500 RLS which is an open optical line system that can double a MSO’s fiber capacity with support for both C and L-bands. These platforms bring a new level of optical reach and packet aggregation to help MSOs deliver capacity closer to their customers. “
Meanwhile, the Ciena Blue Planet software enables MSOs to automate and simplify network configuration, management, monitoring, and troubleshooting. And, he adds, Ciena offers professional services for network operators who want some extra help.
