Hawaiki Submarine Cable won the award for the Subsea Project of the Year and PCCW (News - Alert) Global garnered the Best Subsea Innovation award at the recent Global Carrier Awards in London.
A new entrant in the telecommunications space, Hawaiki Submarine Cable is the only carrier-neutral bandwidth supplier in the Pacific submarine cable market. It launched service on the connection this July.
“Hawaiki Cable is a game changing 15,000 km subsea cable connecting Australia, New Zealand, American Samoa, Pacific Island, Hawaii and Oregon, USA,” writes Winston Qiu for Submarine Cable Networks. “Hawaiki Cable changes the capacity market in New Zealand and Australia, as well as other countries in Pacific Islands.”
Rick Seeto of Ciena says: “Hawaiki is making its mark in the Pacific region by delivering greater connectivity, diverse routes and competitive pricing that are greatly benefitting local businesses and consumers.
“Ciena’s optical and packet networking platforms will serve as a great complement to Hawaiki’s already extensive submarine network, addressing and adapting to the modern requirements of a bandwidth-hungry environment,” adds Seeto, Ciena’s vice president and general manager of Asia Pacific and Japan.
As for PCCW Global, that’s the international operating division of Hong Kong’s HKT. Just last week PCCW Global announced it has signed an agreement with China’s HENGTON Group to connect China to Euripe and Africa via the Pakistan East Africa Connecting Europe (PEACE) undersea cable project. That’s a new high-speed connection expected to go live in early 2020.
Sameh Sobhy, vice president for Middle East and North Africa at PCCW Global, commented: “We are proud that two such reputable industry leaders –HENGTONG Group and Huawei (News - Alert) Marine – have entrusted us and our expertise in cable planning and management to be the commercial channel for the PEACE project.”
Sun Xiaohua, vice president of HENGTONG Marine, a subsidiary of HENGTONG Group, added: “We see the PEACE project as a strategic pivot for the HENGTONG Group to grow from our experience as a subsea cable investor and look forward to identifying new investing opportunities in this market in the future. We are extremely proud to have appointed PCCW Global and Huawei Marine as key collaborators in this project and to achieve a more effective approach for the investment. It is the power of this cooperation that is spearheading the deployment and commercialization of better connectivity between Europe, Asia and Africa.”
