Aviat Networks, Inc. announced that it is joining the Symmetricom (News - Alert), Inc. SyncWorld Ecosystem Program, which was formed to provide tested solutions for mobile backhaul synchronization over packet microwave networks.

In a release, Shaun McFall, senior vice president and chief marketing officer of Aviat (News - Alert) Network said, “Our relationship with Symmetricom enriches the solution options available to our customers globally, allowing Aviat Networks to combine a mix of superior wireless and timing technologies with professional support services and end-to-end management to deliver a cost-effective and versatile backhaul solution.”

As part of the Symmetricom ecosystem, Aviat Networks’ solution portfolio for IP network migration will be optimized, as IEEE (News - Alert) 1588v2 synchronization capability will be added to it. It will also enable a smooth introduction of 4G/LTE. Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE) will also be added to Aviat’s Eclipse platform later in 2010, added company officials.

In order to handle the immense data and video traffic, mobile operators are steadily migrating their backhaul networks to Ethernet. This is expected to offer a reliable method of maintaining synchronization over packet network. Precision Time Protocol, standardized as IEEE 1588v2, will be a standard to be maintained for packet timing.

Accurate timing and synchronization in mobile networks is very important for call “hand off” to maintain voice quality and optimum performance when mobile users are traveling between cell sites.

Manish Gupta (News - Alert), vice president of marketing at Symmetricom said in a release, “As networks migrate to Ethernet backhaul for LTE (News - Alert) deployments, Symmetricom is committed to developing industry-leading carrier grade timing and synchronization solutions that ensure a smoother transition to packet based services. We’re delighted to have Aviat Networks join the SyncWorld Ecosystem Program and look forward to further collaboration.”

For Aviat Networks to be part of the ecosystem it conducted extensive performance and interoperability tests with Symmetricom. They completed tests to verify the performance of 1588v2 timing over microwave backhaul network configurations leveraging real-world deployment scenarios.

Symmetricom’s SyncWorld Ecosystem Program was unveiled to support precise timing and synchronization requirements for 4G/LTE deployments for ensuing a seamless integration for service provider networks. The SyncWorld Ecosystem Program features all elements of the mobile value chain encompassing embedded to network equipment manufacturers.

In related news Aviat also announced a new partnership with operator Clear Talk Wireless to deploy elements of its Eclipse Packet Node microwave backhaul platform to meet subscriber and shared backhaul requirements now and for the foreseeable future.
