Mellanox (News - Alert) Technologies, Ltd. is a supplier of connectivity solutions for data center servers and storage systems. The company recently announced a new pricing structure and an expanded channel for its line of end-to-end 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) solutions.
According to the prices on the newly launched list, the cost of Mellanox’s 10GbE price/port for switches and adapters is much lower than present day industry averages. The Mellanox SX1016 will cost around $188 a port, the Mellanox SX1036, $257 and the Mellanox ConnectX-3 EN will cost around $390 a card.
In a release, Seamus Crehan, President, Crehan Research, said, “In 2012, we expect to see a significant increase in the number of 10GbE deployments, with it becoming the dominant and de facto data center network connection by 2014. Price declines, such as the ones announced today from Mellanox, will help drive volume adoption.”
Based on the research, there are currently more than 170 million data center and server-class ports installed for 1GbE internationally and also around 25 million ports for 10GbE. At present , 10GbE accounts for 13 percent of all Ethernet ports that are installed. This year, Crehan Research expects 10GbE installation to reach around 37 percent.
Eyal Waldman, Chairman, President and CEO of Mellanox Technologies, said, “The launch of the Intel (News - Alert) Romley and Sandy Bridge platform in the coming months is going to give the industry a strong push towards faster interconnect speeds. For data center managers, 10GbE is the minimum data rate they should be considering for all deployments this year. Mellanox products and solutions are delivering 10GbE and higher data rates today – providing better application performance, lower power consumption and improved ROI.”
