The web site devoted to emerging markets, Developing Telecoms, wrote that a Nigerian operator has deployed backhaul solutions across its network for a major expansion. As per the report, Nigerian operator Globacom Nigeria, also known as Glo, has inked a US $6 million deal contract for Ceragon’s (News - Alert) high-capacity wireless backhaul solution, including the deployment of its equipment.

Glo is the second largest mobile operator in Nigeria serving approximately 25 million subscribers, and is Africa’s fastest-growing telecommunications company. In fact, Ceragon was also responsible for building the operator’s original network in 2010 and will now augment it with FibeAir IP-10 and Evolution IP Long-Haul systems, wrote reporter James Barton.

As part of the Glo deployment, wrote Barton, Ceragon will provide backhaul for Glo’s 2G/3G infrastructure network in Lagos. The network modernization will expand the traffic capacity of Glo’s 3G network, while providing legacy 2G TDM support. Subscribers that have had limited or no mobile access will now be able to connect to the expanded network through the wireless backhaul deployment.

Developing Telecoms quoted Ceragon president and CEO Ira Palti, as saying, “It’s not just about the radios and antennas but also about lowering our customer’s total cost of ownership (TCO) and facilitating a faster time to new revenue (TTR).”

“With this approach, we are able to offer operators more capacity,” he added.

Glo is a Nigerian multinational telecommunications company headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria. It started operations on 29 August 2003 and currently operates in four countries in West Africa namely Nigeria, Republic of Benin, Ghana and Ivory Coast.  As of June 2009, the company has employed more than 2,500 people worldwide.
