TMC's Wireless Backhaul Week in Review

Can someone grab me a glass of water? My mouth is on fire after consuming this week’s wireless backhaul news.

This past week was a spicy one.  Spring break hookups are not meant to last, but no one’s saying goodbye anytime soon in the relationships established between Commercial Broadband Solutions and MapleNet; GSMA and WBA; or Corning and Graybar last week.

But in the wireless backhaul community, the ‘it’ couple of the moment is fiber optics provider FiberLight (News - Alert) and the sexy city of Tampa, Florida. Enterprise Networks can’t stop lusting over wireless LAN whose equipment continues to seduce more of the public than Ethernet, but since more Ethernet switch ports have been shipped out over this past year than ever before, stay tuned for this one. The hot single is Qualcom’s Atheros (News - Alert) AR4100P – and by ‘single’ I mean a single-stream WI-FI system for building markets, provocatively conservative by maintaining low energy.

Finally, what’s a traditional review of spring break debauchery without some mention on Cancun? The place is planning to release more wireless surveillance cameras for “security,” and you better believe we will all be watching.

The relationship between FiberLight and Tampa was officiated this week by contract. The sun apparently isn’t the hottest thing in Tampa: it’s wireless service. The Wireless Backhaul Community’s homepage provides the most lucid and concise explanation of the purpose of wireless backhaul, and the synopsis states: “With the explosion of Wi-Fi hotspots, especially as cellular carriers increase their use of long-range wireless broadband to deliver voice and data back to their networks, the need for wireless backhaul becomes extremely important.” Although some people offer the analogy of plumbing, wireless backhaul is glamorous, and the clients are far more demanding. FiberLight builds fiber-optic networks that deliver high quality Ethernet service through diverse means, resulting in superior accommodations. Can your toilet do that?

As long as hotspots are hot, there will be wireless backhaul. Commercial Broadband Solutions and MapleNet went shopping together for the best outfit to correct the wireless backhaul deficiencies for healthcare clients, and after trying on solutions like leased fiber, cable and VPN, opted for Siklu’s EtherHaul, a point-to-point wireless connection.

Meanwhile, Corning and Graybar spawned Mobile AccessVE, which recycles LAN cabling for wireless distribution while maintaining wireless LAN and Ethernet capabilities.

But TMC’s (News - Alert) Steve Anderson was most excited for this week’s partnership between GSMA andWBA, a connection resulting in superior roaming capabilities. The couple brilliantly combined the Wi-Fi Alliance's (News - Alert) Passport Systems and the GSMA's roaming standards with the WBA's Next Generation Hotspot systems, so Steve can now leave the house to grab a sandwich while he continues to report about these matters. While many of last week’s events involved smoothing connections and backhaul issues, Qualcom launched an aphrodisiac, the AR4100P, which Adam Lapede, the company’s senior director, said was implemented to “expand the growing ecosystem of connected devices.”

Cancun implemented an edgy surveillance system this week with the assistance of Redline Communications (News - Alert). The Mexican city thoughtfully considered how security camera visibility disrupts the ambience for tourists not willing to star in Girls Gone Wild. Strangely enough, the event made me realize that college students who willingly corrupt their values on tape are at least kind of safe. The wireless broadband equipment links to an automated monitoring center where voyeurs – I mean security…can better monitor the safety of the city.

Wireless Backhaul is a topic in which seconds can amount to wonders. Sometimes you feel overwhelmed by the relentlessly generated news materializing at the same rate that technology progresses. For this reason, be sure to get your news from a source that never misses the highlights and refuses to get stale, a source that primarily relies on the experts to do the heavy lifting, and most importantly, a source that stays fresh.
