Global Telesat (News - Alert) Communications Ltd (GTC), suppliers of satellite communications equipment and airtime, has introduced the RedPort Wi-Fi Optimizer, which the company claims is the easiest and most cost-effective way to connect laptops or smartphones to a satellite phone or terminal for a fast data connection.

Officials with GTC said that used in conjunction with the SpeedMail Data Compression Software or XGate, the RedPort Wi-Fi Optimizer compresses data to allow a saving of up to 85 percent on data connection costs.

In addition, it also makes web browsing three to five times faster and sending e-mails,  20 percent faster than a regular satellite phone data connection.

“Compared to the competition’s data compression devices the RedPort Wi-Fi Optimizer at just £100 ex VAT or around US $ 159 ex VAT offers a truly cost-effective solution to the sluggish data connections currently seen on satellite phones,” said Jenna Phipps, sales and marketing manager at Global Telesat Communications, in a statement.

Phipps said that this device allows the customers to get the most out of their satellite phone and combined with the included SpeedMail Data Compression Software is perfect for those who need access to e-mail and the web in remote locations.

Company officials pointed out that not only does the device speed up data transfer, it also comes with a built in firewall which will automatically blocks any unwanted traffic such as automatic updates which can cause satellite data costs to rocket.

According to company officials, the Wi-Fi capability enables the user to access e-mail and Internet wirelessly via a Windows or Mac computer and a specially designed app also makes it possible on the iPhone (News - Alert), iPad or iPod.

The Optimizer is powered by an AC charger, although 12V chargers and batteries are also available, offering a variety of flexible power options when travelling whether it be by boat, vehicle or on foot!
