Thanks in large part to the explosion of the mobile device market, there’s more and more good news for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN).
One report after another is showing growth for a market that wasn’t even around just 15 years ago. Mobile networks have taken some big steps forward in the 21st century, to the point that companies have to take more than just browsing into account.
WLANs are becoming so popular that Mobile VoIP has taken notice, taking advantage of the technology in a big way.
A new report by the International Data Corporation (IDC (News - Alert)) shows that WLAN markets are becoming ever more popular, both for the average consumer and for the enterprise market. IDC actually noted that the two combined markets led to a 14.6-percent growth in the third quarter of 2012 over the same time period of 2011.
In particular, the enterprise market saw a huge lift in sales in the 3rd quarter, growing 24 percent in year-over-year numbers.
Just how much is the enterprise sector growing? Q32012 marked the sixth straight quarter in which enterprise WLAN adotion grew more than 20 percent.
"While the growth in the third quarter was marginally slower than what we have seen in the last couple of years, it was still a stellar quarter by any standards for the enterprise WLAN market," said Rohit Mehra, vice president of Network Infrastructure at IDC. "Almost all major and emerging vendors contributed to this strong performance of the enterprise WLAN segment in the third quarter, a period that was highlighted by two significant events: the IPO of Ruckus Wireless (News - Alert), and the acquisition of cloud-networking start-up Meraki by market leader Cisco."
When talking about regions of the world that have seen the biggest growth in the enterprise WLAN market, Japan takes the cake pretty easily. Japan saw a 48.8-percent growth in the market year-over-year in the 3rd quarter.
The United States was able to show solid growth in this market as well with a 25.4-percent increase over the same time period in 2011.
