Leapfrog Services has today launched a cloud-based hosted Wi-Fi service that relies on the ADTRAN (News - Alert) Bluesocket virtual WLAN (vWLAN) solution. This software-based wireless solution centralizes control and management of the WLAN on a hypervisor, which enables control of wireless access points from anywhere in the world.

As such, the ADTRAN Bluesocket (News - Alert) vWLAN allows Leapfrog to offer customers highly flexible, scalable and secure managed WLAN services.

“The ADTRAN Bluesocket vWLAN offers Leapfrog the advanced diagnostic and LAN management utilities we need to ensure high-availability, and because the solution is entirely portable customers know they’re making a smart investment because they aren’t locked in to a specific architecture or provider like with other cloud controllers,” said Emmett Hawkins, CTO for Leapfrog Services, in a statement.

Indeed, Leapfrog turned to the ADTRAN Bluesocket vWLAN as a way to meet the demand for highly available wireless access in the enterprise since it allows for cost-effective scaling of wireless networks in order to accommodate bandwidth-rich applications, higher throughput, a greater number of users and increased mobility. And, since the control function doesn't have to reside on the same LAN as the access points, flexibility is further increased.

For example, Leapfrog customer Cousins Properties, a diversified real estate company, chose Leapfrog's hosted WLAN service as it allowed the company to deploy a standardized solution across multiple Class A buildings without the need for a hardware controller at each location.

In December, the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) also deployed ADTRAN's Bluesocket vWLAN solution as part of a facility expansion and renovation project. In this case, the EICC was also able to limit expense since WLAN control and management resides in the cloud.
