Spreadtrum Provides 40nm Single-Chip Mobile Baseband Platform

As 2G, 3G and 4G markets pick up in China, companies are introducing new products and technologies that capitalize on the demand for these services.

Offering integrated wireless connectivity, Chinese fabless semiconductor provider, Spreadtrum Communications (News - Alert), has introduced its first mobile baseband chipset. Named SC6531, the new product combines features such as Bluetooth and FM with the company’s 40nm-based GSM/GPRS mobile baseband platform.

Working on a low-cost platform, SC6531 makes use of ARM9 processor, yielding enhanced performance and much lower power consumption.

Well suited for the GSM/GPRS feature phone market, this product improves the multimedia experience of its users, as it is equipped with a multimedia accelerator, an FPU accelerator and numerous other functions.

Feature phones entice users to upgrade to a higher version of the basic model of a company, as they offer a breadth of features apart from the ability to make and receive calls.

For individuals, feature phones are a bridge between basic phones and smartphones, as they are neither too simple nor too advanced.

“The SC6531, designed with 40nm CMOS silicon, provides customers with the benefit of the most advanced process technology for GSM/GPRS baseband chipsets, a mature, proven platform with extensive development tools for handset customization, and a high level of integration that brings together the mobile baseband, RF transceiver, PMU, FM and Bluetooth features into a single baseband SoC," said Dr. Leo Li, president and CEO at Spreadtrum Communications. "This combination of advanced technology, platform maturity and high integration supports our customers' strategy.”

Recently, the company helped users to get a closer look at Mozilla’s (News - Alert) HTML5-driven platform. Mozilla selected the company to display Firefox OS at its booth during an event held in China in 2012.

The handset makes use of the 1GHz SC8810 smartphone chip from Spreadtrum Communications.
