Leading the pack in Wi-Fi QoS is mobile developer, Greenpacket, according to Telecomindiaonline.
Greenpacket is known for its breakthrough technology in Intelligent Network Selection and Seamless Network Roaming through the Signal Assisted Switching methodology.
Wi-Fi QoS handles the handover between networks, from Wi-Fi to 3G and back again using a device-client which can, among other things, analyze signal strength threshold, verify Wi-Fi radio, and collect data from Wi-Fi APs and crowd-sourced information – all while promoting an improved use of Wi-Fi hotspots.
Senior general manager of Greenpacket, Kevin Lee (News - Alert), has gone on record claiming that, "Wi-Fi QoS opens the door to mobility driven market needs as the theme of mobility plays out in emerging heterogeneous networks and roaming abilities," and that "Wi-Fi connections are still faster than most mobile broadband options, especially when traveling; paying for Wi-Fi is often cheaper than mobile broadband."
"With the right attachment and prioritization to the right Wi-Fi hotspots...it can significantly diminish the mistake of switching users to a worse connection," Lee added.
The Signal Assisted Switching methodology is currently a pending patent, designed to enhance the user's experience in mobile data offloading by only allowing connection to a Wi-Fi AP when supported by a Wi-Fi signal of sufficient quality.
Wi-Fi QoS is being assessed through several network beta groups in North America, and may become more widely accessible in the next six to 12 months. There has also been an apparent growing interest in the Asian Pacific and Europe.
Greenpacket has also announced its future presence at the 2013 Mobile World Congress (News - Alert) in Barcelona, Spain, February 25-28. Representatives of the firm will be available for discussion of their solution and others.
