InterDigital (News
- Alert), a wireless research and development company, has completed the trial of Wi-Fi over dynamically managed unlicensed spectrum at a macrocell level. The trial extends standards-based technology and will enable several new applications.
The technology, which leverages a unique amplifier in combination with database- and sensing-based spectrum management, is available for field trials now. InterDigital successfully streamed high-bandwidth video at a power range that can cover up to three kilometers in suburban settings or up to five kilometers in rural applications. This solution is expected to help operators launch Wi-Fi backhaul and other applications.
Jim Nolan, EVP of InterDigital’s Innovation Labs said, “InterDigital’s DSM (News - Alert) technology platform is a breakthrough in the use of TV White Space as a networking platform, providing both reliability and performance in the harsher shared spectrum environment. This solution is a first in enabling Wi-Fi to operate over macrocell ranges, supporting a variety of indoor and outdoor use cases, including backhaul, M2M and metro Wi-Fi deployments.”
Also, this new platform can easily adapt to other spectrum bands like the FCC (News - Alert)-proposed 3.5 GHz Citizens Broadband Service. It is optimized for diverse ‘shared spectrum access’ applications, added Nolan.
InterDigital conducted a live, over-the-air public demonstration of Wi-Fi access supported in dynamically selected TV White Space (TVWS) spectrum channels in October, 2012. The demo was done at the IEEE (News - Alert) DySPAN 2012 conference in Bellevue, Washington.
It featured TVWS geo-location identification via integration with TVWS database pioneer Spectrum Bridge. It also demonstrated dynamic over-the-air sensing of TVWS spectrum availability along with Shared Spectrum (News - Alert), revealed officials.
InterDigital also announced the availability of a fully standards-compliant M2M solution. InterDigital’s successful delivery of a fully standards-based solution is designed to drive the cost savings, ease of deployment and broad adoption that characterizes the transition to standards-based solutions in most technology families.
The company strives to develop wireless technology solutions that form the core of mobile devices, networks, and services. Its solutions enable efficient broadband networks and deliver a rich multimedia experience.
