The PC market may be in decline, but there are still a lot of people out there just waiting to scoop up a new monitor. For some, this means a finely tuned, color-accurate IPS display, while others are willing to sacrifice color accuracy for a higher refresh rate, but most can agree that a resolution higher than 1080p would be nice.

Higher-than-1080p resolution monitors have actually existed for some time, to be fair, but the price premium you would pay for 1440p was insane; a 1440p IPS display from Dell (News - Alert) would cost over $1000, for example. Fortunately, it seems that manufacturers have heard the call for reasonably priced, ultra-high resolution monitors, with Dell offering one of the best offerings on this front.

Indeed, the PC manufacturer has finally revealed pricing for its 28-inch Ultra HD (4K) monitor: $699. Previously, Dell teased a price below $1,000, but the smart bet would have been on $999, but it seems the company is out to prove everybody wrong.

The monitor, dubbed the P2815Q, indeed boasts a 3840 x 2160 resolution, but there are a few caveats — which isn’t surprising considering the price point.

First off, 4K resolution tops out at 30Hz, with 60Hz available only at 1920 x 1080 resolution. This kind of makes the P2815Q a bad choice for gaming. Second, the monitor features an anti-glare TN panel, meaning it won’t offer the kind of color accuracy creative professionals seek.

Other specs include a color depth of 1.073 billion colors, 170-degree viewing angles, a 5ms response time and brightness topping out at 300 cd/m2.

So if gamers and professionals need not apply, who exactly is the P2815Q for? Well, for starters, some people will only care about having 4K resolution and the price is right for that. More importantly, this is an important step forward for making 4K monitors cheaper with the end result being, hopefully, cheaper 4K monitors all around.
