Open source pioneer Red Hat (News - Alert) Inc. revealed its plans today to acquire two-year-old scalable open source storage systems provider Inktank for $175 million in cash.

The Inktank Ceph Enterprise provides enterprises deploying private and public clouds with block and object storage software that runs on commodity hardware. Many early adopters of OpenStack clouds leverage the Inktank solution, according to the companies. The Inktank solution, which can help customers scale their storage to the exabyte-level and beyond, is used by such customers Cisco, CERN, and Deutsche Telekom (News - Alert), and its partners include Alcatel-Lucent and Dell.

Redhat aims to combine Inktank’s solution with its own GlusterFS-based storage offering in an effort to become the leading provider of open software-defined storage across object, block, and file system storage.

This news is important both for that reason and because it positions Red Hat to benefit from the software-defined storage market.

"Software-defined platforms will continue to grow faster than any other market segment in the file- and object-based storage market,” says Ashish Nadkarni, research director for storage systems at IDC (News - Alert). “This growth will primarily be driven by a rich and diverse set of data-intensive use cases across multiple industries and geographies."

The transaction is expected to close next month.

"We're thrilled to welcome Inktank to the Red Hat family,” says Brian Stevens, executive vice president and CTO at Red Hat. “They have built an incredibly vibrant community that will continue to be nurtured as we work together to make open the de facto choice for software-defined storage. Inktank has done a brilliant job assembling a strong ecosystem around Ceph, and we look forward to expanding on this success together. The strength of these world-class open storage technologies will offer compelling capability as customers move to software-based scale-out storage systems."
