The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is stepping up to using modern IT principles to connect the 28 collective security organizations that are members of the group. In order to enhance collaboration between these different nations, NATO has elected to choose Incentive Corp.'s intranet software to connect up to 10,000 employees over the next three years.

Rickard Hansson, the CEO and founder of the Swedish company, describes this upgraded network as a “cultural shift” in IT principles that heavily encourages collaboration. “What we've done is simply to focus on creating distributed software,” he explains. “That means it's your own requirements that decide security.”

Ideally, this software will be rolled out to top officials in as little as a few months, according to Hansson. Because the network is based on using wikis, blogs and apps to generate and share content, training on how to use the software can be kept at a minimum. A secure firewall that even Incentive Corp. employees are forbidden from accessing also makes sure that the shared information stays within the pre-approved network.

Incentive Corp. also plans on utilizing WebRTC protocols within the software, which would allow for easy and instant video communication between members all over the world. It also supports instant messaging, voice over IP, and other communication protocols.

However, because security requirements are left up to the individual members that access the system, the nations will all have to work together to develop compatible security settings. If the settings are too strict then some nations will be unable to access the data, but too loose could lead to information leaks. Ultimately, Hansson says that the firewall protecting the cloud server is capable of protecting information while still being accessible, and is flexible enough to meet a variety of settings.
