It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s…a boat? Well, not anymore. The Internet superhero Google (News - Alert) is continuing to work towards new products and customer experience improvement, but after this year’s interactions with two barges on the United States coast, it seems the mission will move forward without boating assistance.

Google has been reported to have scrapped its project on a floating barge in Portland, Maine. The boat had seemingly been intended to serve as an interactive space for consumers to look firsthand at new Google technology; however, the endeavor has been terminated.

Speculation regarding the barges first burst onto the scene this past October, when it was revealed that Google had bought over two boats, one in Maine and one in San Francisco. Both barges had been owned by Delaware-based organization. By and Large, LLC. However, when Google took over, people began guessing that the barges would be used as Google Glass-specific stores, or as remote data centers that could be floated wherever they were needed. When Google acknowledged the San Francisco barge in November, the company indicated that the barge was to serve as a floating sort of showcase for upcoming products and technology. At the time, the Portland barge was not mentioned.

An email from a Google spokesperson only confirmed recently that the Maine barge had been sold, with no further details regarding the project or any sign of its future. The termination is a bit of a disappointment for Portland, as the project would have brought some helpful notoriety. Jessica Grondin, spokeswoman for the city of Portland, said in a statement, "I was hoping for something to come from this. Everybody was waiting to see what was actually going on."

Google may not be moving forward in a boat, but the company is still moving forward, hopefully with more new technologies and updates in the near future.
