While Google and Apple (News - Alert) are competitors in the tech market, that competition doesn’t mean the two firms are ignoring other competition like Microsoft. In fact, the latest move on the iOS format by Google seems to be a legitimate shot across the bow at Bill Gates’ (News - Alert) company. Google announced an update to a number of its iOS Apps yesterday, and those updates seem to be a way to take Microsoft Office head on.

This week, Google (News - Alert) launched an application called slides, which is similar to what it did this spring with Docs and Sheets. Both of those apps’ features had been contained inside the Google Drive app but they are now both standalone offerings. Slides too was something that was inside Google Drive and is now operating all by itself in an iOS application.

We're delivering on our promise to make it possible for you to work with any file, on any device, any time," Google software engineer Li-Wei Lee wrote in a blog post after the application was launched. The launch of the application makes it that much easier to get stuff done, whether you are talking about Google, Android (News - Alert) or Apple and whether you are working online or off.

Google’s real time collaboration tools have already been a big part of its pitch to the business world. The company has been so successful getting that pitch right they’ve even started pitching other tools that don’t scream “big business” like the Google Glass device. Whether putting together a presentation using slides, simply writing something up using Docs or putting together a spreadsheet using Sheets, you can now do something offline and then once you go online those edits will show up for everyone who has access, as long as they’re enabled. It seems with the release of Slides that Google is trying to make even Microsoft’s (News - Alert) most treasured tool in PowerPoint something that isn’t needed anymore.
