BroadSoft (News - Alert), Inc., a provider of VoIP application software, today announced the availability of “Xtended Services Interface,” its new RESTful application programming interfaces.

 

The interfaces are meant to help developers integrate BroadSoft’s carrier-grade voice applications with unified communications solutions and that of Web-based business and consumer applications, such as Facebook (News - Alert).

 

Xsi is the latest component to be announced as a part of BroadSoft’s Xtended Program, an initiative for the creation of mashups which will help integrate BroadSoft’s VoIP platform with other applications that are widely used across by millions. The RESTful-based Xsi allows subscriber and call resources to be accessed and used via HTTP and simple XML. This latest development also requires less client-side software to be written than other approaches for which it is becoming the overwhelming choice for developers to create Web applications.

 

“With the Xsi, it’s easier for developers to add BroadWorks calling features to their favorite applications,” said Scott Hoffpauir, chief technical officer for BroadSoft. “By making the Xsi available, we’re speaking the language of most software developers. We expect the introduction of the Xsi to boost innovation and development of new apps exponentially.”

 

Other interfaces supported under the BroadSoft Xtended Developers Program include Open Client Interface-Provisioning, Client Application Protocol, VoiceXML (News - Alert) and ccXML, according to the company. Access to the Xtended Developers Program and the Xsi and the Xtended Marketplace is free, company officials say.

 

New voice mashups are available to BroadSoft’s nearly 300 service providers across 59 countries and to their enterprise, residential and mobile end-users through the BroadSoft Xtended Marketplace, according to the company.

 

The Xtended Marketplace encompasses enriched features applications for download and purchase which includes mashups for voicemail-to-text service GotVoice, Web conferencing service WebEx, customer management solution ACT! by Sage and BlackBerry (News - Alert) smartphones, company officials say. Using these applications on BroadSoft’s Xtended Marketplace provides immediate revenue opportunities for developers.

 

Major telecommunications companies that use BroadWorks to deliver advanced voice and video-calling services to enterprises and consumers include Sprint, Telefonica de Espana, Verizon (News - Alert) and Cox Communications. BroadSoft Xtended also enables service providers to broaden their voice services into the social networking and business applications that are used daily by their customers.
