RadiSys and LCR Electronics Launch Ruggedized ATCA ATCA Platform Military and Aerospace

By Tim Gray, TMCnet Web Editor

Advanced embedded solutions provider RadiSys Corporation and LCR Electronics have teamed to launch ruggedized AdvancedTCA (News - Alert) platform solutions for the military, aerospace and government market segments, according to the companies.

As demand has increased for programs such as land mobile communications, aerospace surveillance and maritime networks designed to collect and process large amounts of data in harsh environments, the need for reliable commercial off-the-shelf systems has become greater than ever.

In fact, RadiSys (News - Alert) has been working to improve the way managed ATCA platforms are delivered in recent years, as the emergence of commercial off the shelf (COTS) hardware platforms, Carrier Grade Linux and management middleware has had a significant impact on the market.

As TMCnet recently reported, in a recent white paper from RadiSys, the company called the integration of these technologies a “daunting task” and one which is still in its infancy.

Teaming with LCR, a designer and manufacturer of custom rugged backplane and chassis systems and other components, the Ruggedized ATCA standards-based solutions from RadiSys are expected to provide both reliability and high performance under extreme conditions, according to Venkataraman Prasannan, senior director of the ATCA Product Line at RadiSys.

“LCR Electronics has deployed systems in some of the most extreme conditions, and their expertise in customizing for the MAG sector is superior,” said Prasannan. “The flexibility of our best-in-class ATCA building blocks coupled with LCR Electronics’ MIL- Qualified ATCA ruggedized chassis provides our customers with the opportunity to develop applications with minimum integration effort, enabling flexibility and faster time-to-market.”

The idea behind the collaboration is to bring MAG customers the ability to leverage a ruggedized ATCA platform for command and control, in addition to adding network appliance solutions that require high bandwidth and high performance in aircraft, ships and ground mobile equipment.

The RadiSys’ portfolio of Promentum ATCA products are already deployed in a multitude of communications networks under stringent reliability environments such as NEBS. The military and aerospace environments and their respective network-centric applications are similar in nature.

In recent years, RadiSys has been adding to the Promentum product family with two new offerings for service providers, the Promentum SYS (News - Alert) - 6016, for high density applications and the Promentum SYS-6002, for lower-density subscriber areas.

MAG customers can now take advantage of the portfolio of the ATCA solutions by combining the COTS solutions available from RadiSys with ruggedized chassis from LCR Electronics, according to the companies.

In addition, LCR has developed and fielded the industry’s first ruggedized ATCA chassis tested to, and complying with, MIL-STD-810 and MIL-STD-167 specifications, making them suitable for deployment in a ruggedized environment, they added.

Under the agreement, the two companies will deliver RadiSys’ Promentum building blocks in LCR Electronics’ ruggedized KBWD chassis portfolio. This collaboration has already been integrated as a systems solution for two major military programs, according to Tom Malek, product manager of LCR Electronics.

“As the leading provider of ATCA systems and building blocks, RadiSys was the natural choice for us to work with to deliver ATCA platform solutions,” said Malek “The depth and breadth of their offering, combined with our MIL-STD tested chassis, gives our customers the flexibility, performance and reliability to meet any situation, whether its 50,000 feet in the air or traversing down a jungle track.”

RadiSys Promentum portfolio includes the 10G ATCA platform and building blocks such as ATCA-4500, a versatile single board computer based on Intel (News - Alert) Xeon 5500 (“Nehalem”) processors, ATCA-7220 Dual OCTEON Packet Processing line card and a multitude of other solutions to enable compute and network-centric applications.
