Flat Screen Monitor Arms Essential to Ergonomic Workstations

By Stefania Viscusi, Assignment Desk Editor

In today’s workplace, the introduction of new technologies and especially computers, has increased the number of hours most workers spend sitting at a desk to handle daily tasks. While these extended hours in front of a computer may save time and money vs. traveling to business meetings or having to communicate by more traditional means, it can also have a negative effect on worker’s health if proper ergonomic designs are not included in the furniture setup.

Designing and utilizing ergonomic accessories for workspaces further increases productivity and reduces the fatigue and discomfort caused by sitting at the workstation . Some  key design elements to improve workers health and productivity include an adjustable keyboard to support a users wrists, the proper chair, correct lighting for the task, a foot rest, and finally, perhaps a very important ergonomic accessory that isn’t always utilized - a flat screen monitor arm.

By using a flat screen monitor with an adjustable arm, it is possible to adjust the monitor to a viewing position that is comfortable for each user. In addition it’s easy to move the monitor out of the way when it is not in use – leaving more desk space to work comfortably on tasks.

The best way to ensure safe use of a computer monitor is to adjust the monitor so that it is at least an arms length from the screen and so that the top edge of the monitor is eye level with the user.

Setting the computer monitor up in this way, and using the proper posture and positioning of hands on the keyboard can help reduce stress on the body and the need to lean or slouch forward and put more stress on the users back.

In addition to possible back injuries, improper posture and incorrect use of the keyboard also has the potential to cause carpal tunnel syndrome over time.

Interior Concepts, a provider of call center furniture offers planning and customization solutions that help companies to more effectively utilize their floor space and improve performance and profitability.

Also, to promote health and increased productivity in the workplace, the company offers different ergonomic furniture packages including a ‘Basic Package’ which includes a flat screen keyboard arm and keyboard mechanism as well as a ‘Sit-to-Stand Package’ that includes a flat screen monitor arm w/additional adjustability and keyboard mechanism and a ‘Sit-to-Stand Deluxe Package’ that includes a flat screen monitor arm with additional adjustability, a sit-to-stand keyboard mechanism with a wrist rest, a task light and a footrest.
