First Choice ER Unveils LBS-Based Emergency Medical Treatment iPhone App

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributor

In a sign of the increasingly critical role that location-based technologies are expected to play in healthcare, First Choice Emergency Room has announced the release of “Emergency – First Choice ER, Version 1.2.”

Officials at the company say it includes useful medical information for consumers, and – in a reflection, perhaps, of the now-legislated electronic medical records field – can keep track of important personal medical information.

With the application, consumers can locate the nearest emergency room or hospital, using the GPS-enabled Apple iPhone (News - Alert) device:

“This application will enable iPhone users to have essential medical information available at their fingertips during the most critical of times,” said Rick Covert, COO at First Choice ER.

It makes sense that emergency responders – and, increasingly, legislators – are seeking to leverage LBS technology in the healthcare field, particularly in emergency situations. More and more states, for example, are adopting legislation that requires enhanced 911 services – or “E911” – of organizations that offer emergency dispatchers a single street address for a more complicated physical location.

E911 technology leverages LBS to pinpoint the exact whereabouts of callers from places such as enterprise businesses and schools.

The new app includes a database of information relevant to a multitude of both everyday and urgent care situations. Company officials said that consumers can find everything from how to provide instant care for wounds and stings to how to perform CPR.

The application also provides consumers with a central place to store information, including name of their primary care physician, what medications they are taking, and any allergies they might have. Company officials said that this information is critical to getting necessary care administered in a timely manner, ensuring the health of the patient.

Available for free, the application can be download through Apple (News - Alert)iTunes and the App Store via the iPhone by searching for “First Choice.”

First Choice ER facilities are freestanding, fully equipped emergency rooms. It offers an innovative concept in the delivery of emergency medical services for adult and pediatric emergencies, both major and minor.

“Our hope is to make further use of available technologies, extending care beyond our emergency rooms and into the living rooms, workplaces, and daily lives of those who depend upon us most,” Covert said.
