Enterprise Edge Market Grows to $3.5 Billion in Q2 2013

Dell’ (News - Alert)Oro Group a provider of accurate market information on the networking and telecommunications industries published a report which announces that the enterprise edge market has grown to about $3.5 billion in the second quarter of 2013.

This is an increase of two percent when compared to the growth during the same period in 2012. The report also reveals that in this quarter enterprise-class 802.11ac wireless LAN products were shipped for revenue.

Chris DePuy, vice president of Enterprise Edge research at Dell’Oro Group, said, “With new 802.11ac-compliant WLAN devices now shipping, enterprises are faced with the prospect of having to upgrade their cabling and campus Ethernet switches to satisfy the greater power and throughput requirements for these devices.”

According to officials a majority of the installed base of Ethernet switches that are 802.3af-capable are not enough to service 802.11ac wireless. Although new switches possess greater power the throughput needs of 802.11ac needs multiple Gigabit Ethernet ports or even 10 Gigabit per second ports. However, this in turn increases the need for more in-building cabling.

“This is important because enterprises will be forced to develop specialized wiring and network systems that are separate from those previously shared with desktop wiring and switches, or else run 802.11ac at less than full capacity,” DePuy added.

The Dell’Oro report explains the trend towards convergence of wired Ethernet and wireless LAN. It also covers aspects about WLAN access points; enterprise controllers (wireless and wired); campus ‘Edge’ Ethernet switches and access management software.

It also features separate breakouts of Ethernet Switch and wireless LAN in addition to featuring tables that highlight manufacturers’ revenue, active connections, and average selling prices.

Enterprise edge encompasses enterprise-class wireless LAN (WLAN), campus Ethernet switching equipment and related software. The Dell’Oro report covers vendors such as Aerohive (News - Alert) Networks, Alcatel-Lucent, Aruba Networks, Cisco Systems, Dell, Enterasys, Hewlett-Packard, Huawei Technologies, Juniper Networks, and Ruckus Wireless.

Dell’Oro Group also released a new report about the telecommunications and networking industries. 10 Gbps Ethernet controller and adapter revenue and shipments were up 14 percent and 16 percent respectively in 2Q13 according to this report.
