Sennheiser Headsets Beat Acoustic Shock with ActiveGard

By Stefania Viscusi, Assignment Desk Editor

In everyday office life and in the call center, where headsets have made productivity and mobile communications possible, there is a great risk for hearing loss and other hearing-related injuries as more and more workers are spending time talking to their customers.

Not only is the working environment in these busy places often loud but also, as conversation time increases, being exposed to sudden bursts of noise such as an extremely loud sound like a shrill alarm siren, fax machine signal or verbal plosives can cause headaches, tinnitus, and even loss of hearing.
Especially for people who use headsets daily, and for long periods of time, the chances of acoustic shock are greater than someone holding a receiver because the user's reflex can not be leveraged to move the receiver away from their ear when a loud sound occurs.
For this reason, Sennheiser Communications (News - Alert) introduced ActiveGard™, a technology unique to their headsets, and which protects users from acoustic shock syndrome. Acoustic shock is more widespread than one might think, with cases popping up in call centers all over the world and these cases require extensive research, time and company money to handle.
With Sennheiser's ActiveGard technology, an active protection system designed for professional, frequent headset users, the human reflective action is replaced with an invisible assistant.
According to Sennheiser, the ActiveGard system cuts in before any amplitude-related, damaging acoustic signal can reach the ear—not only reducing the dangerous energy of the sound, but also sustaining the suppression until a safe volume level is reached. Only once the volume returns to a safe level does the technology then restore the normal working volume and switch back into surveillance mode.
All of Sennheiser Communications telecommunications headsets are equipped with ActiveGard technology to safeguard users from any imminent dangers, so headset workers can work in a safer, more stress-free environment and without having to worry about damaging their hearing. Their entire SH and CC line of Sennheiser Communication’s headsets are OSHA compliant.
