China 'Catalyst' for PON Growth in 2009
By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Infonetics Research (News - Alert) has released its annual PON Equipment in Asia Pacific report, which tracks WDM-PON; 2.5G and 10G GPON; and 1.25G/2.5G and 10G EPON equipment vendors, ports, and revenue in the major markets of Asia.

Among other findings, the report concludes that Asia Pacific PON equipment revenue totaled $1.1 billion in 2009, up 38 percent from 2008, and that the Asia Pacific region accounted for 63 percent of the world's PON equipment revenue in 2009.

Company officials say the nations tracked include China, India, Japan, South Korea, and the rest of Asia Pacific as a group, including Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Indonesia, Taiwan, Malaysia and Vietnam.

'Not surprisingly, China was the catalyst behind passive optical network equipment growth in 2009," notes Jeff Heynen , directing analyst for broadband at Infonetics Research.

The report notes that China Telecom's (News - Alert) and China Unicom's heavy investments in Ethernet-PON OLTs and ONTs in 2009 will be joined by China Mobile's Gigabit-PON fiber-to-the-home investments in 2010.

Subscriber growth continued in Japan and South Korea, Infonetics found, where "much of the infrastructure buildout for fiber-to-the-building and FTTH services has already been completed."

The study also found that India's BSNL (News - Alert) helped pace the GPON market in 2009, "purchasing equipment to support their 700,000-line rollout throughout 2010."

The report also predicts strong growth in the Chinese PON market, "particularly the GPON segment." And by 2014, Infonetics Research forecasts, 10G EPON and 10G GPON will together make up about 1/3 of all PON equipment revenue in Asia Pacific.

Companies tracked include: Alcatel-Lucent, Alphion (News - Alert), Calix, Cambridge Industries Group, Corecess, Dasan Networks, Datang, ECI, Enablence, Ericsson, FiberHome, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Huawei, Mitsubishi, Motorola, NEC, Nokia Siemens (News - Alert), Occam Networks, Ocean Broadband, Oki-Fujikura, Samsung, Sumitomo, Tellion, Ubiquoss, UTStarcom, Zhone, ZTE, and others.

Earlier this week Infonetics released the first edition of its 2010 biannual 10G/40G/100G Networking Ports market size and forecast report, which tracks 10 Gigabit, 40 Gigabit, and 100 Gigabit optical and Ethernet ports on enterprise and service provider equipment.

'While worldwide spending on service provider IP edge routers declined overall in 2009, spending on high-speed 40G ports on IP edge routers increased 125 percent," Infonetics found, adding that a similar trend is playing out in other routing and switching segments and in the optical network hardware space.
