NoviWare FlowShaper Delivers Scalable Traffic Management and H-QoS

For network operators, the capital and operational expenditures (CAPEX and OPEX (News - Alert)) can quickly add up when new technologies are being implemented. Each solution therefore must be evaluated carefully with a benefit cost analysis and price-performance ratio to determine if it is the right fit for the organization. The NoviWare FlowShaper by NoviFlow looks to deliver a solution with a CAPEX and OPEX network operators can live with in the area of traffic management and Hierarchical Quality of Service (H-QoS) as part of the company's Network Operating Software (NOS) for high-performance fully programmable forwarding planes.

Traffic management and QoS go hand in hand in today's network service delivery. Effectively managing network traffic will play a great role in improving the quality of service. The NoviWare FlowShaper takes advantage of network processors that are already deployed globally in chassis-based edge routers to leverage the Traffic Management and H-QoS capabilities. According to the company, this makes NoviFlow the industry's first truly scalable high-capacity traffic management and H-QoS technology delivered in a 1U enclosure, resulting in exceptional price-performance.

Using the NoviWare advanced SDN architecture gives FlowShaper many advantages over traditional H-QoS solutions. It begins with more varied sources of classification, delivering more flexibility with the most complete set of OpenFlow match fields in the SDN industry, thus allowing users to define new match fields. This type of flexibility means the flow classifications and associated policies, including Drop and DSCP Remark, are compliant with RFC2697 srTCM and RFC2698/ MEF (News - Alert) 5 trTCM, making it possible to track up to 1 million meters.

The goal of shaping traffic is to avoid congestion. By placing flows into 16 queues per class and a maximum of 46,000 classes for a total of 736,000 queues, they can be forwarded through a 4-level hierarchy where traffic shaping is applied based on priority and rate limits, with 1 GB of deep DRAM buffer memory used for traffic shaping and Weighted Random Early Detection (WRED).

NoviFlow’s NoviWare has the widest support for the OpenFlow specification, including all OpenFlow 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5. The NoviFlow NoviSwitch offer filtering options at line rates of 1Gbps, 10Gbps, 25Gbps, 40Gbps and 100 Gbps supporting up to 16 million simultaneous flows. In a single architecture, it simultaneously supports multiple network services, including switching, routing, service chaining, firewalling, load balancing, software defined wide area networks (SD-WAN), and more.
