By implementing mobile unified communications solutions, enterprises can recoup $5,000 in annual productivity losses per employee, says a new report from Sonus Networks (News - Alert), a provider of SIP communications.

The research was conducted by Webtorials Editorial and Analyst Division. The report provides enterprises with a snapshot of the opportunities and challenges to deploying unified communications in its current state.

The report, titled, “Mobile Unified Communications (News - Alert): The Emergence of 4D Convergence,” finds that approximately two thirds of all enterprise knowledge workers are mobile at least 25 percent of the time. With the explosive growth of smartphones and tablets and the popularity of VoLTE, this number is expected to grow further.

This would mean that enterprises that lag behind in UC capabilities will experience a substantial productivity gap between mobile and onsite workers. The research estimates a productivity loss of 2.5 hours per week per employee.

Communications and collaboration are key to productivity improvement. The survey has found that approximately 18 percent of projects are delayed because of ineffective team collaboration and an estimated 16 percent of projects are delayed because a decision maker could not be reached.

“Mobility has become an integral piece of the UC puzzle for enterprises,” said Steve Taylor, editor-in-chief and publisher for Webtorials, in a statement. “Enterprises must push their unified communications capabilities beyond the office walls if they wish to get the maximum return on investment from their technology investments and the employees who use them.”

A survey on medium-to-large enterprises found that nearly one in three enterprises have already implemented a “widespread” or “extensive” deployment of mobile unified communications in their network. Driving that adoption is the recognition by enterprises that unified communications capabilities could be critical to the success of an increasingly mobile workforce, the report said.
