DOCOMO PACIFIC, a wholly-owned independent subsidiary of NTT (News - Alert) DOCOMO, has announced that the company will start installing the small cells this month on the Pacific island of Guam.

The island faces various problems from the local climate, especially from typhoons.

Typhoons force locals to construct buildings with particularly dense concrete construction, and although it gives them safety from harsh weather, it also makes it very difficult to penetrate these walls with standard 3G outdoor network signals.

Small cells are becoming an integral part of networks, so companies are looking for the ability to quickly install them. This will help them solve coverage problems or provide increased capacity.

In this scenario, operators are looking to provide the best possible network service, irrespective of location. ip.access small cells will also assist users in offering coverage and capacity deep inside even the biggest office buildings.

DOCOMO PACIFIC has four retail outlets in Guam and one on Saipan. The company provides the largest and latest selection of handsets including Android and BlackBerry (News - Alert) smartphones.

The Enterprise, SoHo and Consumer small cells will be deployed as part of a next-generation core network upgrade by DOCOMO PACIFIC, who were particularly attracted to the end-to-end capabilities of the ip.access small cell access points, Small Cell Gateway (News - Alert) and integrated operational support.

CEO Simon Brown said, “We’re very pleased to be extending our business in the Asia Pacific region and to be working for the first time with DOCOMO PACIFIC. This contract is also further vindication of our decision to concentrate on delivering end-to-end capability and ensuring that we give operators the tools to successfully integrate and manage the small cell network layer within their macro networks.”

Recently, the company declared that its subsidiary DoCoMo Pacific has introduced 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE (News - Alert)) mobile broadband services in Guam.
