During the current economic recession, technologies that offer cost savings and increase efficiency at a time when companies need it most, are surviving the slump. 

 

One technology in particular, an industry expert told TMCnet in an interview this week, is Voice over IP.

 

According to Jan Linden, president of engineering of Global IP Solutions (News - Alert), the economic scenario has moved businesses more toward investing in technology that “delivers a strong ROI and reduces OpEx.”

 

“Our customers have seen the value and cost saving benefits of VoIP for a while now and most are making a move to implement video conferencing to reduce travel and overall operating expenses,” Linden said.

 

Other recent industry research based on a survey conducted by Infonetics Research (News - Alert) shows that although the economy is not yet stable, companies are still planning to invest in voice communications.

 

The survey, which asked decision makers in charge of IT expenditures at North American companies about their plans for 2009, found that most companies are planning a slight reduction in communication services, but an increase in infrastructure investments – indicating that buyers are willing to continue making capital investments as long as it reduces their overall expenditures.

 

Due to the increased interest in Voice over IP, there has also been a surge in service providers and equipment makers offering solutions. This increase in competition has allowed Voice over IP technology to grow technologically and has lowered price points.
