IP Communications: Looking Ahead With Aculab

By Greg Galitzine, Group Editorial Director

As we turn the page on 2007 and kick off 2008 in earnest, I posed several questions to some of the leading companies in the IP Communications space, among them Aculab (News - Alert). Chris Gravett, director of sales and marketing of the company responded.

GG: As you look back at 2007, how would you describe Aculab’s experience over the past 12 months?
CG: We have seen communications solutions based on Aculab’s Prosody X technology deployed in volume across the world. 2007 has been the year when the promise of Prosody X has been delivered to end users. The transition to IP has accelerated rapidly during 2007.
GG: What were some of the highlights of 2007?
CG: Becoming the dominant provider of enabling technologies in a number of major sectors including conferencing, fax, contact center and military communications systems. The launch of our ApplianX range of communications appliances was also a highlight for us, which included the release of two products — the ApplianX IP Gateway (News - Alert) and the ApplianX Gateway for Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007.
GG: What can our readers expect to see from Aculab in 2008?
CG: We will continue to broaden the capabilities of Prosody X and S. Our priorities will be in line with our customers’ and prospects’ requirements. Our biggest challenge is an infinite number of possibilities with a finite resource. An idea of what is likely is: video record and playback; 3G video; video gateway; codecs and protocols such as Speex, G.722.2, V.150.1; SIGTRAN; and many more capabilities. We will also see an acceleration of new releases in our ApplianX range of products.
GG: Are you planning any new product rollouts early in the year?
CG: Not early in the New Year but in Q2 we will see a major Prosody S release. Prosody S is our host media processing software. We have seen tremendous market penetration during late 2007. Version 3 brings resources in line with Prosody X, adds a Linux version and includes new functionality. From that point forward Prosody X and S will mirror each other, giving the developer the choice of DSP or host based media resources.
GG: What are some of the industry trends that you’ve been keeping an eye on and what effect will they have on Aculab’s roadmap as we head into 2008?
CG: The migration to IP is the biggest trend in our industry. T.38 fax and V.150.1 modem over IP are requirements that have and will impact our roadmap. The other trend is the ever quicker time to market that communications solution providers demand. That has been the catalyst for our single purpose, plug and go, ApplianX products.
