Octasic (News - Alert), a leading innovator of media processing solutions, has announced a significant enhancement to the Vocallo product family that allows designers of enterprise IP communication servers and media gateways to combine voice and video on the same platform.
Vocallo, the industry’s first digital signal processor (DSP) based on an asynchronous architecture that delivers the highest performance-to-power ratio, is now available today.
“For both enterprise communication server manufacturers and core gateway manufacturers, video is a fast growing application,” said Frédéric Bourget, Octasic’s director of product management.
This level of performance, according to Bourget, has been attained without the need for hardware acceleration allowing a completely soft implementation of simultaneous voice and video applications on a general purpose DSP core. As a result, media gateway providers and enterprise communication equipment manufacturers can now offer to their customers – at an affordable cost – a complete solution based on a single platform.
“In today’s market, no other media gateway DSP provider can offer integrated voice and video on a single chip without expensive, third party software,” said Bourget. “Because the fully integrated Vocallo platform offers a complete software solution, our customers can quickly develop leading edge bandwidth connections – such as those found in mobile networks.
"Octasic is in the right place at the right time with Vocallo," said Nick Lippis, founder and president of Lippis Enterprises. “As IP video is being massively consumed on the internet and within corporations, IT managers are struggling to bulk up their infrastructure to follow. Octasic may be the only fabless semiconductor vendor offering a product to communication server manufacturers that allows them to approach video from multiple platforms,” said Bourget.
The video software enhancement offers the same benefits as Vocallo providing increased voice quality. Vocallo can trans-code large numbers of video streams, while maintaining video quality on error-prone and bandwidth-constrained wireless networks. All Vocallo video codecs include error resilience and concealment, minimizing the effects of packet loss.
Vocallo’s new video enhancement software includes support for industry standards, including H.263, MPEG-4 and H.264. In addition, Vocallo’s unique, proprietary bit rate controller provides superior video quality on low
