Infonetics Research Shows VoIP Gateways Market Struggling

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

The VoIP gateway market is waning, according to Infonetics (News - Alert) Research. The market research firm recently released its first quarter 2011 Enterprise Unified Communication, VoIP and TDM Equipment report focused on preliminary market share results. The research was led by VoIP and IMS analyst Diane Myers.

Myers shared in a statement, "The global PBX (News - Alert) market is typically down in the first quarter following a strong fourth quarter, and 1Q11 was no exception as the overall market dipped 2.6 percent, dragged down by slowing TDM PBX sales as businesses continue to shift to IP. The good news is the quarter was up 8.5 percent over the year-ago quarter (1Q10), signaling a return to stability.”

According to the preliminary report, the enterprise telephony and unified communications (UC) equipment market, which is made up of VoIP gateways, TDM PBX, KTS, IP PBX systems, IP phones, and UC applications, totaled $2.52 billion in the first quarter of 2011, which was down 4 percent from the fourth quarter in 2010.

The overall OBX market was led by Avaya (News - Alert) for the second quarter in a row, and Cisco continues to lead the emerging unified communications market. Asia Pacific is helping NEC to produce another strong quarter and the pure IP OBX segment was the only one to have a positive territory in the first quarter.

This report provides market size, market share, analysis and forecasts through the year 2015 for the global and regional industries. Analysts measure the enterprise telephony market, which covers VoIP gateways, IP PBX, TDM PBX, KTS and other unified communications solutions. Vendors examined in this report include Avaya, Cisco, Dialogic, Samsung, NEC, IBM, HP, Alcatel-Lucent, Aastra, AudioCodes, ShoreTel (News - Alert), Siemens and many more.

In other related research, SIP trunking has jumped 70 percent in the enterprise session border controller market. The enterprise video conferencing and telepresence market is expected to more than double by 2015 as unified communications continues to gain adoption among enterprises in North America.

In other VoIP gateway news, Patton Electronics Company is set to integrate the eXtremeDB IMDS across a full range of IPLink IP router and SmartNode VoIP technology. The eXtremeDB offers an ultra-small footprint and in-memory database system (IMDS) that is designed explicitly for real-time applications and embedded systems. The solution offers a real-time database that minimizes RAM and CPU demands, while also offering unparalleled performance, reliability and even development flexibility.
