Residential Consumers Need VoIP Too

In the telecommunications space, we often talk about the benefits of VoIP and what it can do for the corporate environment. The small business especially is often the star of such coverage, as they can easily access features and capabilities beyond what was once afforded on a traditional PBX (News - Alert). This focus is important, but it does overlook the benefits VoIP  can deliver in a residential environment.

Like those used in the business environment, residential VoIP relies on a high speed Internet connection to make calls. More information can be sent each time a connection is made and the consumer can enjoy a lower cost of communications on a regular basis. A VoIP switch not only streamlines communications platforms, it also eliminates some of the fees consumers have paid for years.

One of the best things about making a switch to VoIP is the fact that the consumer doesn’t have to invest in new hardware. Most homes already have an Internet connection in place, and a simple converter to switch analog signals to digital allows them to also keep their existing phones. Consumers are increasingly recognizing the benefits associated with combining voice and data, eliminating the costs associated with an analog line.

The near elimination of long distance fees is an important perk. Calls completed within the U.S. cost the residential user less than a penny per minute, depending upon the provider. The caller no longer needs to rely on connections through the Public Switch Telephone Network (PSTN), which can greatly impact the cost of the call.

Reducing the cost of overseas calls is also an important advantage of VoIP. The Internet is able to connect calls directly to the local phone switch. As a result, the phone lines that stretch halfway around the world are avoided altogether, as well as their associated cost. The residential consumer can often leverage VoIP plans with unlimited international calling, which is perfect for those with family or friends overseas.

Let’s not forget the free features. It’s not uncommon for VoIP plans to provide a number of extra features for free that are often only available at an additional charge from the traditional provider. Take call waiting, caller ID and other features. All of these can be had with the traditional landline, but they all cost extra on the phone bill. VoIP phone lines offer these capabilities and more, all inclusive within the same monthly fee.

That monthly fee has to be low to deliver the expected benefits. What would you do with a phone line for just $7 per month – what would that do for your household budget? Calls to VoIP lines are absolutely free and the savings are passed on to the user. Why not leverage such a cost effective method for staying connected before you head to the office?
