Wi-Fi hotspots benefit carriers by lowering the bandwidth load on their regular network, and give the consumer an alternative source for accessing content online, so it is a win-win for both parties. Cable service providers also use Wi-Fi technology to give their customers access for their mobile devices when they are not in their home or place of business. Cablevision has increased the number of hotspots in the Tri-State area to 100,000 in order to keep up with the demand of mobile devices.
Customers who have broadband service through Cablevision and its Optimum (News - Alert) Online product have free access to the thousands of Wi-Fi hotspots. This drive is part of an expansion which includes other cable companies to provide the service in city parks, railway stations and trains, shopping centers, major streets, marinas, and even sports fields. The improvement also includes the increase of broadband speeds for residential and business customers. The other service providers include Time Warner (News
- Alert) Road Runner, Comcast Xfinity, Bright House Internet, and Cox Cable, which are part of the CableWiFi collaborative.
CableWiFi lets subscribers of the participating companies get access to their network in cities across the United States.
The Wi-Fi hotspots can be located using the Optimum Wi-Fi Finder application or at optimum.net and Channel 910 on Optimum TV. Once it is located, customers can use their Optimum ID and password to connect. If a user doesn't want to enter the username and password, the automatic sign-in feature can be used to connect without entering log-in information.
"More than one million of our broadband customers are using Optimum Wi-Fi, providing them with the maximum connectivity that today’s digital lifestyle demands. Not only is Optimum Wi-Fi incredibly fast and reliable, but our customers can connect their mobile devices to our hotspots when they are out and about to avoid the significant overage fees that are common to so many cellular data plans," said Gemma Toner, Cablevision’s senior vice president of broadband product management.
Cablevision provides a portfolio of products and services including digital television, voice and high-speed Internet services and valuable local media and programming.
