Wireless Expense Management: Optimization, Auditing and Invoice Processing

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Senior Editor

Wireless expense management, the newest branch on the telecom expense management (TEM) tree, is a process that’s usually much to complex for an enterprise to handle internally. The various aspects of wireless expense management often are outsourced to a firm that specializes in this type of work.

Generally speaking, wireless expense management can be broken down into three pieces, all of which can be efficiently handled by a TEM firm like Rivermine (News - Alert). These are optimization, auditing, and invoice processing.

Optimization is the process of analyzing the enterprise’s communications needs and determining the best products and services to meet those needs. All users are considered, and different options are considered to optimize usage. The end-result is selection of the most cost-effective rate plan available from the current carrier.

Optimization is a complex process because it involves calculating an enterprise’s true cost per minutes for wireless services and comparing that to contracted rate per minute. Often, the two don’t match up. Obtaining synergy here can save a bundle.

Related to optimization is auditing, or the process of examining usage patterns and uncovering inefficiencies. For example, often the auditing process reveals devices that are no longer being used and can be disconnected. High volume usage patterns are also examined and optimized.

The auditing process also ensures that compliance with contract details is being met. It may also assist in the process of complying with government regulations.

Once auditing and optimization are complete, ensuring continued success with wireless expense management requires efficient invoice processing. Great efficiency gains can be realized with automation tools and services offered by a TEM provider. Rivermine, for example, uses a variety of software tools, combined with expertise in the field, to streamline invoice processing.
