XO Communications Expands its Network with Two New Carrier Agreements

By Patrick Barnard, Senior Web Editor, TMCnet

Network operator XO Communications (News - Alert) has reportedly expanded its domestic and international MPLS network capabilities during the past year with a series of domestic and international partner agreements.

The company reported last week that during the past year, it signed agreements with two leading domestic and international carriers. One agreement was focused on expanding the company’s domestic footprint, the other focused on expanding its reach overseas. The company claims that as a result of these agreements it now has coverage in all 50 U.S. states – as well as 22 nations on five continents, including Australia, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand and the United Kingdom.

"In today's global marketplace, it's more critical than ever before that enterprises leverage technology to ensure they have uninterrupted and secure communications capabilities in place -- be it in the United States or abroad," said Vince Margiotta (News - Alert), vice president of product marketing at XO Communications, in a release. "XO Communications' expanded network footprint will provide our multinational customers with increased global access, combined with our high quality service and competitive rates."

XO Communications, which just recently released its second quarter earnings report, offers virtual private network services for businesses of all sizes. A VPN is a secure, managed network which is entirely dedicated for the client – no other network traffic is co-mingled on these dedicated networks. As such a VPN delivers superior performance, reliability and security compared to other third party networks where data and multimedia services are typically delivered on a “best efforts” basis. With a VPN, businesses can connect offices, customers and partners and converge a wide range of voice, video and data applications over a single IP network infrastructure.

The company's MPLS IP-VPN provides a wide range of access options to connect locations and flexible Classes of Services to prioritize Internet, intranet, extranet, voice, video and mission-critical business applications -- all over a single, high performance application-aware IP network.

"XO's expanded MPLS IP-VPN coverage helps the company more effectively meet the domestic and international connectivity requirements of enterprise customers,” said Rena Bhattacharyya, research manager for Enterprise Telecom Services at IDC (News - Alert), in the release. “It enables XO to offer more consistent services across a broader footprint, which is a critical part of its strategy to support large businesses.”

Like most VPN operators, XO Communications is continuously building out its network. The company is reportedly exploring other strategic partnerships and opportunities to offer its customers the most expansive network coverage and capabilities possible.

In July, XO Communications announced that it has been selected to provide a nationwide MPLS IP-VPN solution for Ottawa University, a leading higher education institution with six campuses located across four states. The company also announced that its award-winning Session Initiation Protocol trunking solution, XO SIP is now certified interoperable with NEC’s (News - Alert) UNIVERGE SV8100 and UX5000 communication platforms.
