Skype Continues to Offer Endless Possibilities

In the ever evolving world of technology it seems as though there are endless possibilities. From Google testing out augmented reality glasses, to the 2013 Lincoln MKZ with lane keeper that can drive itself, to Skype (News - Alert), technology continues to provide consumers with limitless possibilities.

At first glance compared to the first two examples, Skype may not seem like a big deal. But the possibilities that a webcam and Internet connection can do for people are priceless. The Voice over IP service provider is making dreams come true, bringing soldiers stationed overseas right into the living room or delivery room with their children, to even allowing them to attend their own wedding and exchange vows with loved ones thousands of miles away.

That wasn’t any more evident than this past weekend for Jacqueline Durham, as she got to finally exchange her I Do’s with her love Trey, who is stationed in Afghanistan. Jacqueline, spending the time with her family in Georgia, was able to clearly exchange her vows and I Do’s with Trey, who was standing with his fellow soldiers overseas.

Getting married over Skype may not be a dream wedding for most, but Skype is making dreams come true in the case of a sick Virginia boy. Six-year-old Nathan Norman has always dreamed of being a police officer, but being diagnosed with a form of terminal brain cancer derailed those plans.

Luckily for Nathan, Watertown Connecticut police Chief John Gavallas caught wind of this and took the proper steps to make Nathans wish a dream come true. Last month, Nathan was sworn in as an honorary police officer with a plaque, badge and hat en route to his Virginia home to be added to his collection.

"We decided to make him an honorary police officer and present him with a badge and plaque," Gavallas said in a recent interview. "And we were able to do that over the internet, be able to meet this young man and hopefully make this Christmas a little bit brighter."

When Skype isn’t being used for heartwarming purposes, it is being used for some of the biggest moment in a young high school student’s life. Harvard Law School has begun using Skype as an acceptable form of interviewing all law school applicants. Skype will be the main form of interviewing future applicants, but the school will still accommodate those with restricted Internet access with an old fashioned face-to-face meeting.

Who would have thought that a small company launched in 2003 would morph into a mega enterprise with nearly 600 million registered users and continue to offer an infinite amount of joy to its users anytime from anywhere in the world.
