GlobalMeet has a whole new interface, thanks to PGi. The process of joining and hosting video meetings on the cloud-based web conferencing platform has been simplified. GlobalMeet 5.0 is set to move on from iMeet and ReadyTalk Meeting, PGi’s two online meeting forums.

No longer does PGi utilize Flash and Session Initiation Protocol (News - Alert). Replacing the tools are HTML5 and WebRTC allowing for phone calls; webcam broadcasts; file and screen sharing via Chrome, Internet Explorer, Apple iOS, and Android (News - Alert).

"Whether it's a desktop, just a straight browser or a mobile device, it's one click into the meeting to join it, or to start it if you're a host," said Patrick Harper, CTO at PGi, based in Atlanta.

One virtual meeting fits up to 125 participants; down the line, 300 to 500 participants will be accommodated. Additionally, PGi offers users 24/7/365 customer support, which is easily accessible via the 5.0 interface versus the traditional model.

Down the line, it is anticipated that virtual and video conferencing will be the preferred method over traditional conference calls, according to Wainhouse (News - Alert) Research. Despite the fact that audio conferencing has always been the bigger market, it is no secret that video conferencing is creeping in, from business meetings and education, to telehealth and beyond. Personalized web-based conferencing (PWC) platforms are on the rise.

"The reason that people are moving to PWC in general, and why they would move to 5.0, is it's a richer experience," said Marc Beattie, senior analyst at Wainhouse Research. "I can do what I need to do if I need to do it, instead of having to pivot between different applications."

By 2021, it is estimated that $739 million globally will be spent on cloud video conferencing, double the $351 million spent in 2016, according to IHS (News - Alert) Markit.
