Regardless of where you work, doing business effectively means having all of the tools necessary. One of the handiest tools a businessperson can use is video conferencing technology. This goes for remote employees or entrepreneurs: having the ability to connect face-to-face, regardless of location, is extremely valuable. Here are some tips on how to set up your space to be video conference friendly.

Lighting is key. Independent video writer and producer Terence Taylor says light should not come from behind or from just one side. The first creates a silhouette effect, while the second shades out the unlit side of the face. The lighting should be directly in front of the speaker (window, lamp) while ensuring all shadows from overhead or external lights are blocked out.

Being seen in the best light is extremely important but even more so is the audio quality. If the room you are holding the call in is stone quiet, the computer mic should be enough. But, to be on the safe side, a microphone or headphones equipped with a microphone are recommended.

Your seated posture should feel natural and frame you from head to waist. Additionally, keep the camera at eye level for the most natural feel. "I find that I like meeting people's eyes," added Terence Taylor. "Just in terms of communication, especially in business, you want that kind of connection." Don’t look at the computer screen but at the camera directly.

The background area the conference is filmed in should be clutter free and without distractions. Your presentation should be the prime focus.

What to wear? Patterns can be distracting so stick to neutral colors. A nice blouse or sweater works; look like you care and want to be on the call, but, be comfortable so you are not fidgeting.
