Actian Corp., a provider of big data management solutions, recently acquired Versant Corporation (VSNT), a provider of specialized data management solutions. The acquisition will expand its capabilities and further strengthen Actian’s big data analytics offerings. 

Versant is the creator of Versant Database Engine, which allows enterprises to handle complex information in environments that demand high performance, concurrency and availability, significantly cut hardware and administration costs, speed and simplify development and deliver products with a strong competitive edge. Versant's solutions are deployed in more than 150,000 installations across a wide array of industries, including telecommunications, energy, financial services, transportation, manufacturing, and defense. For more than 20 years, Versant has been a trusted partner of Global 2000 companies such as Ericsson, Verizon (News - Alert), Siemens and Financial Times, as well as the U.S. government.

Actian recently formed a strategic alliance with ScaleMP, a provider of vSMP Foundation virtualization software. vSMP Foundation aggregates individual servers to create a virtual symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) spanning across machine boundaries. Actian will now be able to supply the most demanding customers with databases that can grow to terabytes (TB) of data which utilizes the aggregated memory.
