PolyOne Corporation (POL), a provider of specialized polymer materials, services and solutions, recently announced that its ECCOH High Performance Solutions are helping LEONI Special Cables GmbH to improve the durability and function of communication cables for oil and gas rigs. LEONI is a global supplier of wires, optical fibers, cables and cable systems, as well as related services for the automotive sector and further industries.

"By working closely with LEONI we developed a highly-technical solution that offered the additional chemical resistance and durability they required," commented Craig Nikrant, president, Global Specialty Engineered Materials, PolyOne Corporation. "It's yet another great example of how PolyOne strives to deliver solutions that help our customers succeed."

ECCOH low smoke and fume, non-halogen compounds are ideal for flame-retardant applications. These compounds, often referred to as "halogen-free," are well-suited for environments where smoke mitigation is of particular concern, such as those within closed spaces where means of escape is restricted (e.g., hotels, large office blocks, off-shore installations, trains, metros, and ships).

"The cable sheathing formulation developed by PolyOne helped us to produce tougher, more chemically resistant cables for extreme conditions, while also meeting our high standards for quality and enabling strict regulatory compliance," said Peter Gerstenberger, vice president for the Industrial Solutions business unit at LEONI.

In related news, PolyOne recently unveiled solutions that help wire and cable manufacturers to boost efficiency and reach their sustainability goals at the WIRE 2014 trade show. Recently introduced offerings include: ECCOH XLS, a moisture-cured technology that helps manufacturers reduce production and operating costs Next-generation FireCon CPE (chlorinated polyethylene) RoHS-compliant material for wire and cable jacketing that processes 30% to 70% faster and reduces scrap for improved profitability without compromising performance ECCOH LSFOH formulations for elevated temperature wire and cable help to meet UL requirements, maintain equipment flexibility, streamline secondary processing, and reduce scrap.
