At the recently-concluded ITEXPO East in Miami, TMC's (News - Alert) Juliana Kenny had the chance to interview i2iS Cyberspace Solutions' principal, Douglas DePeppe, who spoke at the Smart Grid Summit on cybersecurity.
"Everyone recognizes with the smart grid, you're hooking up utilities to the Internet, but understanding the dynamic that presents, in terms of the threats to compliance issues, the threat generally from the Internet, expanding threats all the time, generally making sure that the audience has a deeper understanding of the nature of the threat, because the nature of the threat keeps changing, it's become very dynamic, and very pernicious,” said DePeppe.
For attendees of his presentation, DePappe said the message he wanted them to take away was that “while information security has been around for some time, the nature of the Internet threat now requires a new solution, a new approach to security, more comprehensive, more dynamic and vigilant. So kind of laying that out, both in terms of what the threat is, and what we're able to provide in terms of a new approach to cybersecurity."
He was asked to elaborate on what that new approach is, and observed that "you need to have all your risk identified, and typically most companies look at security in terms of their technical problems, whereas a lot of the threats now are targeting users. You have to have training, you have to have governance, you may even want to look at insurance. There are consulting aspects to identifying all the different threats, and what are the prescribed, or tailored approaches to addressing that risk."
He mentioned that the company is an alliance partner with Green Energy Corporation, saying "we're excited about what they bring to the marketplace," and they recognize the importance of the security issues, as well.
