Is M2M the Magic Behind Disney?

By Maurice Nagle, TMCnet Web Editor

It’s 100 percent untrue to say that M2M is all the magic behind the wonder that is Walt Disney (News - Alert) World, but it is most certainly fair to say that the burgeoning technology makes “the Most Magical Place on Earth” a bit more magical.

Back in March, Disney invested $1 billion into its MyMagic+ program in an attempt to personalize the “Disney” experience. The “MagicBand” is a way for guests to reserve their places in line, order food, enter their hotel room and payment for anything in the park—just to name a few functions of this nifty tech.

The bracelets allow for Disney to collect massive amounts of data on his guests through wearable and M2M technology. Many guests may find this a touch worrisome, where as others have rejoiced in the notion of not having to carry around a wallet or identification while experiencing each of the parks.

Let me give you an example of how this is a game-changing move. Say it’s been a long day of riding rides, chasing children, waiting in line and walking; and it’s getting close to dinner time. Through the use of a smartphone app one can not only book dinner reservations, but also order dinner—this isn’t even the best part. You and your party arrive at your restaurant of choice and sit at a table; each table is outfitted with sensor technology to recognize the MagicBand, and before you know it, your food magically appears at your table; and payment is made entirely through the RFID-powered MagicBand bracelet on your wrist. That is quite possibly the most stress free dining experience around—even with a couple crabby youngsters at the table.

There’s one more point of note that must be made. Ever go to an amusement park and enjoy a ride that takes your picture while you are making that awful face on your way down the steep decline? After the ride, you are asked: would you like a copy of your photo? You want to say no, but your wife wants to remember every moment of this “magical” experience. So, for the rest of the day you’re stuck carrying around this picture, because of course, this was the first ride of the day. My Magic stores all of your pictures to your online account, so while enjoying a magically M2M meal they can be easily reviewed through a smartphone to choose the “keepers.”

In review, Disney has leveraged M2M technology to provide a means to make purchases, fast-track services, check into parks, hotel rooms and link to one’s photos from the excursion—oh, and did I mention the bracelets are waterproof? Disney clearly sees a strong future in the M2M space, the innovation train is headed out of the station; Do you have your ticket, excuse me, MagicBand?
