Eltek Valere Intros Green Power Solution for WiMAX Networks

Eltek Valere has developed a new, environmentally friendly way to power 3G/4G WiMAX networks. The Flatpack2 Power System reduce power consumption, lowering the cost of operations both in terms of money and environmental impact.

Eltek Valere is a provider of DC power systems for telecommunications and industrial markets worldwide.

The new power system is available in 150-, 300-, 600- and 1200-amp versions. Eltek Valere debuted its new solutions at the CTIA Wireless (News - Alert) 2008 show this week. The company aims to demonstrate how much energy the wireless industry can save using the new system.

Eltek has done its research to show why green power makes sense for the wireless industry. The U.S. wireless industry alone uses more than five billion units (1 unit = 1 kWh) of power per year. The by-product of generating all that power is 4 million tons of CO2 greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere. Plus, seventy percent of operator expenses go to powering network equipment.

The use of AC-to-DC power systems causes a lot of energy to be wasted, Elktek noted. That’s because conversion efficiency is very low, with between 8 and 15 percent of power being wasted — equaling 750 million units and 600 thousand tons of unnecessary waste each year.

The Flatpack2 Power System is based on Eltek Valere's new Flatpack2 HE rectifier, a 2,000-watt, -48 volt rectifier that offers 96 percent power conversion efficiency.

“The Flatpack2 is a great piece of power engineering — giving wireless carriers everything they need in a system from economical operation to fast and flexible load connections,” said Greg Fasullo, Eltek Valere’s chief marketing officer, in a statement. “At 96 percent efficiency, this system sets a new industry standard — one that I hope competitors follow so that the true environmental benefits will be widespread.”

There are about 200,000 base stations in the U.S., requiring an average of 5000 energy units to operate, with about 1500 units wasted. The Flatpack2 system can reduce this power loss significantly.

Elktek’s system includes a distribution bus that allows flexible distribution of power out to networking equipment (load). The system also has multiple power buses that can be used for priority and non-priority equipment, allowing the carrier to shed the load of non-priority equipment to extend the battery life in the event of a power outage. The systems are available with 24V and 48V outputs to support a wide range of wireless equipment.

The Smartpack controller built into the Flatpack2 Power System delivers local and remote system and battery string management along with fault detection and full system configuration all through a Web browser-based management system.

The Flatpack2 Power System is now available direct from Eltek Valere’s or through its resellers. All systems are both UL and NEBS certified. The new system is compatible with Eltek Valere’s legacy Flatpack2 rectifiers and its new Flatpack2 HE rectifiers.
