Toshiba IPedge EP Targets the Under 40-user Market

Toshiba (News - Alert) IPedge EP is the newest model of the company’s recently introduced IPedge Linux-based IP telephony system which is now available in three different sizes. The new EP server targets smaller businesses with 8-40 employees (users), while the EC server supports 200 users and the EM server supports up to 1,000 users.

In June, Toshiba launched IPedge, a new single server IP telephony system that complements the company’s existing Strata CIX converged telephony platform, but offers Toshiba customers an IP-only platform delivered on a single Linux-based server that runs multiple applications on one server. Call processing, voicemail and centralized management are built-in and part of the standard software, while unified messaging, UC client software and Meeting audio/Web conferencing reside on the system as license-activated applications. Contact center applications can be incorporated optionally for IPedge such as ACD and Taske reporting which require Toshiba’s Media Application Server (MAS).

  • Models: IPedge is available in three different sizes depending on the number of users and business requirements. The new EP server targets smaller businesses with 8-40 employees (users), while the EC server supports 200 users and the EM server supports up to 1,000 users and incorporates a dual hard drive and dual power supplies for businesses that require reliability and continuity if there is a hard drive failure.
  • Phones: The system operates with Toshiba’s IP5000-Series phones, available in eight different IP phone models with varying characteristics depending on the business user’s needs; advanced models have Gigabit Ethernet, 9-line backlit displays, full duplex speakerphone and integrated Web browser functionality. Toshiba has also certified a number of Polycom (News - Alert) SIP-based endpoints, including desk phones, WiFi wireless phones, DECT wireless phones and conference phones.
  • Applications: The new IPedge EP (40-user system) has the same features and Unified Communications (UC) suite of applications (Messaging, Call Manager and Mobility) as the larger EC and EM versions, except that the Toshiba Meeting audio and Web conferencing application cannot run internally as a license-activated application. Instead, the EP system can connect to an external server running Meeting (24 audio/Web participants). The integrated Meeting application for the larger IPedge EC and EM systems supports 24 and 48 audio/Web participants, respectively.

Toshiba IPedge EM and EC versions began shipping as of June 14, 2011 in North America, followed by the 40-user IPedge EP on August 9, 2011. IPedge is being offered in parallel with the company’s Strata CIX converged system that supports both IP and TDM devices, but existing Strata CIX customers can choose to upgrade by replacing the hardware and software; all IP end user devices (digital phones are not compatible) and most applications can be retained. Or, Strata CIX and IPedge systems can be networked using the IPedge Net private networking application based on QSIG (up to 128 nodes).
