IObit Releases Smart Defrag for Windows Vista and Future Windows 7

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributor

IObit has released Smart Defrag, a free defragmenter that works automatically on the PC. The company was working on the development of Smart Defrag for the last 11/2 years.

Defragmenter helps in reducing the amount of fragmentation in file systems. The software reduces the fragmentation by physically reorganizing the contents of the disk to store the pieces of each file close together and contiguously.

It also attempts to create larger regions of free space using compaction to impede the return of fragmentation. Moreover, some defragmenters try to keep smaller files within a single directory together as they are often accessed in sequence.

This latest offering has been tested by over 1 million users, and is currently available to all PC users, according to IObit officials.

Some of the key features of Smart Defrag include an “install it and forget it” feature that works automatically and quietly in the background of the computer; and besides the defragmentation functionality, it also places the frequently used data into the fastest area of the disk.

Additional features include a defragmenting engine specially designed for modern, large hard drives. It is designed for Windows 2000, XP, Vista and future Windows 7.

“Most users cannot clearly know the current fragmentation status of their hard disk, and they have no good control of performing defragmentation . We have taken care of all PC users’ needs in our free Smart Defra,” said Hugo Dong, president at IObitm.

Dong said that the defrag in Windows XP is not bad with limited function. He also said that although Microsoft (News - Alert) uses a scheduled defragment function in Windows Vista, the function lacks of clear and visual interface.

He added, “Its defragmentation algorithm and schedule mechanism are also inefficient for a modern operating system.”

Smart Defrag is available in English and other languages.

Earlier this year, IObit said that it’s working with Grisoft (News - Alert) to make AVG Professional Editions free. In addition, Internet users will be able to acquire from IObit free licensed AVG Anti-Virus Professional Edition, AVG Anti-Spyware or AVG Internet Security.
