Flash Networks, Cisco Pursue Traffic Management Solution

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

Mobile Internet solutions provider Flash Networks reportedly is joining Cisco Systems Inc. to provide carriers with an Intelligent Traffic Management solution to maximize revenues, network utilization and subscriber satisfaction.

“The industry is seeing a change in behavior; both businesses and consumers are demanding mobile access for bandwidth-intensive applications and services,” said Merav Bahat, vice president of Marketing at Flash Networks (News - Alert). “Our partnership with Cisco gives service providers better insight into customer activity and lets operators deliver a unique offering for market differentiation.”

The Intelligent Traffic Management solution uses Flash Networks’ 3GPP-compliant Policy and Charging Rules Function and Cisco’s (News - Alert) Mobile Service Exchange Framework. The solution is offered as part of Flash Networks’ mobile Internet services gateway.

Flash Networks has already deployed the Intelligent Traffic Management solution at Skylink, a Code Division Multiple Access operator in Russia, for traffic management and differentiated charging.

Cisco SEF, according to officials, provides a scalable environment to support a broader range of business and consumer services for IP Multimedia Subsystem (News - Alert) and non-IMS applications. SEF also enables providers to bundle voice, video and data services.

According to Sergey Belonozhko, area sales manager for SP at Cisco, the new Intelligent Traffic Management solution enables operators to meet the challenge of maximizing revenues while protecting network assets by providing tiered services that ensure fair bandwidth usage and protect the network from traffic congestion.

With SEF, Cisco helps operators leverage the existing infrastructure and create a more intelligent network which is able to dynamically control, authorize, and bill different customer types according to their needs, Belonozhko said.

The Intelligent Traffic Management solution includes several features that support personalized data plans. Service providers can notify subscribers when they are near usage quotas, provide a temporary bandwidth boost, offer data plan extensions to support additional IP services, officials said.

Subscribers can also set personalized usage caps and can update them in real-time based on personal financial limits. The solution can also be used to both insert targeted advertising based on subscriber browsing patterns, and to block inappropriate content for safe browsing.

Flash Networks recently announced that it’s acquiring Unipier, a provider of intelligent policy management engine that gives network operators business flexibility to deliver innovative and personalized data services.

Unipier’s (News - Alert) policy management engine enhances Flash Networks’ mobile Internet services gateway to give unparalleled business flexibility for service creation and service management, officials said.
